Why switch to Fiber Optic? From the Cisco’s Visual networking Index of 2011, global IP (Internet Protocol) traffic hit 20.2 exabytes per month in 2010 and 242 exabytes per year.By the end of 2016, the global IP traffic will surpass 1.3 zettabytes per year or 110.3 exabytes per month.Note:

  • 1 ZB (zettabbyte)=1000 EB (Exabyte)
  • 1 EB (exabyte)=1000 PB (petabytes)
  • 1 PB (petabyte)=1000 TB (terabytes)
  • 1 TB (terabyte)=1000 GB (gigabytes)

The traditional Coaxial Cable has higher loss when Signal frequency increased, therefore Coaxial Cable cannot travel long. Fiber optic does not depend on Signal frequency, the light signal can travel much longer on fiber.

  • With 100 Mbit Ethernet: coaxial transmits only 100 Meters while fiber optic transmits up to 40Kilo Meters
  • With 1 Gigbit Ethernet: coaxial transmits only 100 Meters while fiber optic transmits up to 70 Kilo Meters
  • With 10 Gigbit Ethernet: coaxial transmits only 100 Meters while fiber optic transmits up to 80 Kilo Meters

Fiber Optic is using the WDM (Wavelength Division Muliplexer) technology to increase the capacity of a single fiber which has almost an unlimited bandwidth.  Therefore in order to satisfy the future growth of bandwidth, adopt to Fiber Optic is necessary.
